FIGHT FOR FREEDOM

WHY WE PROTEST THE DISPLAY OF COMMUNIST OBJECTS

HAY CHIEN DAU CHO TU DO

TAI SAO CHUNG TA PHAN DOI VIEC TRUNG BAY HINH TUONG CONG SAN

  1. Ho Chi Minh and the red communist flag symbolize the regime which is responsible for the death and suffering of the Vietnamese people in the last 50 years.   Ho Chi Minh himself brought Communism to Vietnam and imposed the totalitarian and repressive regime first in the North and then the entire country following the end of Vietnam War in 1975.

  1. Following the World War II in 1945, Ho Chi Minh directed the land reform campaign which was responsible for the torture and/or execution of hundreds of thousands of landowners and imprisonment of millions of intellectuals, artisans and business people in gulag like concentration camps. Many survivors as well of victims of those ordeals are still living in the United States.

  1. Following the Communist takeover in Northern Vietnam in 1954, over two millions Northerners were forced to leave their homeland for the first time to take refuge in the South.  Many of these people subsequently fled Vietnam again in waves of boat people following the fall of Saigon in 1975.

  1. During the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese people on both sides of the war suffered almost five million deaths, not including countless other casualties and damage to the country and its people.  As a calculated deterrence policy.  Communist agents carried out numerous acts of atrocity against the civilian population, including massacres of over 5,000 civilians during the Tet Offense in 1968.  They also detonated bombs or explosives in crowded public places to terrorize the public, and executed people or relatives suspected of having any connection with the southern government.

  1. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, the Communist regime carried out a series of revenge campaigns which were designed to exterminate, punish and isolate a large portion of the southern population who had any connection with the previous regime.    These campaigns included imprisonment of hundreds of thousands of military servicemen, civil servants, intellectuals, artisans, or business merchants. All of them were sent to concentration camps under the euphemism of "re-educationcamp." They deprived families or relatives of those held in concentration camps or those of   "suspected class" of basic rights or freedoms, including the rights to have family, right to worship, right to reside at a certain location, or the right to earn a living.  They also forcibly relocated millions of people with suspected background into the wilderness under the name of "new economic zone"  while denying the entire population of basic rights such as freedom to worship, freedom of speech, or freedom to vote.  These programs continue still today.

  1. As a result of the repression committed by Communist regime against the entire population, more than two millions of people risked their lives to flee the country by boat, with half of that number dying on the high seas.  For those who landed on a temporary shore, tens of thousands fell victims to piracy, rape, robbery, physical beatings or spent countless days in squalid refugee camps and in their agony were forcibly repatriated to Vietnam.

Vi su ap buc cua che do cong san ap dat toan the nguoi dan, hon 2 trieu nguoi da lieu mang bo nuoc ra di bang duong bien, gan mot nua da bo minh duoi day bien.  Mot phan con lai tro thanh nan nhan cua hai tac, cuong hiep, cuop boc hoac cho doi moi mon trong nhung trai ty nan de roi cuoi cung da bi tra ve Viet Nam trong tuc tuoi.

  1. Currently, Vietnam has one of the worst records in human rights violations according to authoritative reports from Amnesty International,  Human Rights Watch or U.S. State Department's Annual Report on Human Rights.  Religious persecution is rampant in the country.  People in Vietnam do not have basic rights such as freedom of assembly, freedom to worship or freedom to travel.  The country is still run by the Communist Party which does not tolerate any dissenting ideas.  Display of a flag not approved by the government, such as that of South Vietnamese Government, is a serious crime in Vietnam.  Improving diplomatic or economic relationships with the international community in the last decade has only prompted the regime to tighten up its control of the population for fear that foreign influence would de-stabilize the government and threaten the survival of the Communist Party.

  1. Among the Vietnamese immigrant communities in the U.S. and other countries around the world, almost everyone has a horror story to tell as a victim of the communist regime.   Understandably, the Vietnamese people anywhere in the world would be enraged to see the display of such Communist objects in their last place of refuge.  These symbols simply bring back memories of the horrors that actually happened to them or their immediate family members. People may realize that a display of such symbols is protected by basic laws of the U.S., such realization can hardly overcome the surging emotion or feelings that run through each and everyone of these victims each time they see those objects.  Let's say how many rape victims would knowingly help their perpetrators next time they see them in an unrelated car accident.

  1. To compare the display of the portrait of Adolf Hitler in a Jewish community does not adequately explain the issue.  In the case of the Nazis, people saw the holocaust and understood that such violent killing was wrong.  In the Vietnamese situation, nobody seems to understand the extent of the atrocity except the victims themselves.  But these victims are often misunderstood as "anti-communist fanatics," when in reality they are simply victims who cannot adequately express themselves.
